For lunch last Friday, Cassie and I made our way to Dupont Circle for Nando’s Peri PeriSouth African/Portuguese style flame-grilled chicken. With the combination deal they had going for lunch, we paid around $12 for a delicious serving of fresh, free-range chicken done up with the mild lemon and herb sauce and a bit of the spicier peri-peri (chillies!) sauce and the side of rice.

According to the Nando’s website, peri-peri (or pili-pili) is “the Swahili name for the Bird’s Eye Chili…all true Peri-Peri hails from southern Africa.” Portuguese explorers used it with other herbs to blend with their own recipes, including it in a sauce used to baste chicken…which leads us to the deliciousness that is Nando’s!
