Jeff’s one request during his visit to D.C. was that we try out Pitango Gelato , so we went for dessert after the obligatory stop at Eastern Market’s Market Lunch for their crab cake sandwich (omgahhh how I LOVE their crab and fried green tomatoes!) and a bit of wandering around the farmers market area.

Some of my favorite Pitango flavors I sampled were the cardamom and almond. We ended up getting the Bosc pear sorbet and hazelnut chocolate gelato (as per my fruit + creamy/chocolate combination rule) – both were excellent. Good find!

Jeff’s choice – a dulce de leche filled cupcake with a velvety chocolate frosting.

I’m glad pumpkin flavors aren’t confined to autumn

Sort of stumbled upon Billy’s Bakery in Tribeca when turned away from brunching at Da Mikele’s around the corner. The best thing was that besides being an adorable shop (like most cupcake bakeries), Billy’s cupcakes actually tasted fresh, substantial without being overwhelmingly sweet or dense, and were just the right size (as in, not so small I feel more ripped off than I already am paying three dollars for a cupcake and not so ridiculously large that I need to eat it with a fork). My pumpkin cupcake and bottle of Ronnybrook’s skim was the perfect breakfast!

I went with a savory brunch meal at Stecchino: mushroom, caramelized onion, and garlic egg scramble with the most delicious baked potato crisps on the side. In the battle between sweet and savory brunch/breakfast items, I’m usually pretty content with savory, probably because I really, really love eggs.

Aren’t they adorable?

To be honest, I don’t really like truffles. They’re too sweet and cakey — and I don’t get it. Is it cake? Chocolate? Mushrooms? (For the longest time, I though truffle oil and cake truffles were supposed to bear some sort of similarity.) But Momofuku Milk Bar‘s B’day Truffles are really pretty and taste like Funfetti cake dough, if a bit too sweet to eat more than a bite.
